La pierre branlante est un rocher en situation instable, situé à la sortie du village, en contrebas de la route qui sortant du village longe le cimetière. Le panneau explicatif qui lui est attribué indique qu’une simple pression de la main suffit à la faire bouger. Le rocher est en effet posé en équilibre sur son socle de granite.
La Pierre Branlante, de par sa forme si particulière, est également surnommée le « sabot de Gargantua ». La légende veut que Gargantua ou un géant nommé Roland (comme on le trouve dans les Légendes du Gévaudan par B. Bardy) ait laissé là son sabot.
Le site est intégré à un parcours « Le Chemin de Ronde », qui fait le tour du village de Châteauneuf-de-Randon.
