Le mont Cynthe se situe sur l'île de Délos, dans l'archipel des Cyclades, en mer Égée méridionale.
Dans la mythologie grecque, à la suite de sa liaison avec Zeus, Léto fut poursuivie par la jalousie d'Héra qui lui interdit de mettre au monde ses jumeaux. Pourtant, avec l'aide de Zeus, Léto réussit à trouver de l'abri sur le Cynthe où elle resta dissimulée d'Héra, et donna naissance à Apollon et Artémis.
