Hélice est célèbre pour son temple de Poséidon depuis l'époque homérique : dans l’Iliade, Homère dit de la ville qu'elle est grande, et que Poséidon en est maître ; c'était l'une des douze villes de la Ligue achéenne. Elle fut ruinée en 373 av. J.-C. avec Bouras par un tremblement de terre, suivi par un raz-de-marée qui les submergea.
