Après que l'Allemagne a dû restituer le tableau L'Agneau de Dieu à la Belgique comme stipulé dans le Traité de Versailles, et que les Belges ont vu une menace de la Seconde Guerre mondiale se profiler, il a été décidé en 1940 de donner au tableau un abri sûr au Vatican. Lorsque le tableau était en route vers le Vatican, l'Italie a déclaré la guerre avec l'Allemagne et les plans ont été modifiés. On a choisi de transporter le tableau à Pau, en France.
