Le Capitole est l'une des sept collines de Rome sur lesquelles Rome a été fondée. C'est le centre religieux de la ville avec le Temple de Jupiter capitolin consacré à la triade Jupiter, Junon et Minerve. Par extension chaque cité romaine se doit d'avoir son Capitole.
Son altitude est de 48 m d'altitude sur l'Arx , de 35,9 m d'altitude dans l'Asiylum et de 44,7 m d'altitude sur le Capitole proprement dit . Le Palais sénatorial est également le siège de la municipalité de Rome.
