C'est aussi une Nomenclature d'unités territoriales statistiques de premier niveau à l'échelle de l'Union européenne et une Circonscription législative européenne.
Cette région englobe quatre des vingt régions du pays : l'Émilie-Romagne, le Frioul-Vénétie Julienne, le Trentin-Haut-Adige et la Vénétie.
