Le mathématicien et scientifique Daniel Bernoulli est né dans la ville de Groningue, à l'emplacement de la bibliothèque publique actuelle, en tant que fils de Johan Bernoulli. Il a étudié la médecine et est parti en 1725 pour l'académie récemment fondée de Saint-Pétersbourg, où il a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec Leonhard Euler pendant six ans. Daniel Bernoulli est le premier auteur à avoir tenté d'établir une théorie cinétique des gaz. Il a appliqué cette théorie pour fournir une explication de la loi de Boyle. Avec Leonhard Euler, il a travaillé sur des problèmes dans le domaine de l'élasticité et le développement de l'équation de la poutre d'Euler-Bernoulli.[2] Son principe de Bernoulli est d'une grande importance en aérodynamique.
