Cette porte de la ville du XIVe siècle était également appelée la Bergerpoort ou Maestrichterpoort, d'après les lieux auxquels elle menait.
La Grendelpoort, nommée d'après un puits voisin, a survécu à la destruction du château de Valkenburg en 1672 et a récemment été soigneusement restaurée. À l'extérieur de la porte se trouve une grande statue en bronze d'un portier en vêtements traditionnels.
Sous la Grendelpoort, vous pouvez passer, le bâtiment lui-même n'est pas accessible.
