Pour environ 13 000 florins, en 1639, le peintre Rembrandt van Rijn est devenu propriétaire d'un bâtiment situé sur la Sint-Anthoniesbreestraat à Amsterdam. La maison a été construite en 1606, dans un nouveau quartier, qui deviendrait plus tard le quartier où résidaient les Juifs d'Amsterdam : la Sint-Anthoniesbreestraat est devenue la Jodenbreestraat. Mais des problèmes financiers ont forcé le peintre à revendre la maison des années plus tard.
