Nulle part dans le monde, vous ne trouverez autant de moulins réunis qu'à Kinderdijk. Vers 1740, 19 moulins robustes ont été construits ici, qui sont jusqu'à présent bien entretenus et encore en service.
Les moulins pompent l'eau excédentaire des polders de l'Alblasserwaard qui sont situés à un niveau inférieur à celui de la mer, vers la rivière voisine, la Lek. La rivière évacue à son tour cette eau vers la mer du Nord.
En 1997, les moulins de Kinderdijk ont été inscrits sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
