La station de Heerlen est depuis le 1er janvier 1896 la gare de Heerlen. Ce jour-là, la ligne de chemin de fer Herzogenrath – Sittard construite par Henri Sarolea a été officiellement mise en service. Longtemps, c'était la seule gare à l'intérieur des limites de la commune, mais depuis 1982, à la suite d'une réorganisation communale, la gare de Hoensbroek fait également partie des limites de Heerlen. En 2007, une gare nommée Kissel a été mise en service sur la ligne vers Landgraaf, qui a été de nouveau fermée en 2018, suivie en 2010 par la gare Heerlen Woonboulevard sur la ligne vers Maastricht. Ainsi, depuis la fermeture de la gare Heerlen Kissel, la commune dispose de trois gares.
