Sassenhein est une réserve naturelle privée dans la commune de Groningen, située au sud du village de Haren. Le secteur est composé de deux plans d'eau, le Noordplas et le Zuidplas. Un pavillon se trouve près du Noordplas. Les petits lacs sont particulièrement appréciés des pêcheurs et des amoureux de la nature. Ils sont situés entre les zones plus élevées de la Hondsrug et le Hoornsediep, dans une région de tourbière basse qui s'est formée il y a environ 6000 à 3000 ans dans la vallée de la Drentsche Aa.
