Le 9 mai 1987, le vol 5055 LOT affrété par un Iliouchine Il-62 de la compagnie polonaise LOT Polish Airlines au départ de l'aéroport Frédéric-Chopin de Varsovie en Pologne et à destination de l'aéroport de New-York-John-Fitzgerald-Kennedy aux États-Unis s'écrase à Varsovie peu après son décollage. Les 172 personnes à bord ainsi que 11 membres d'équipage périssent.
