Dans le cadre des Grandes Invasions, les Suèves se sédentarisent dans la région correspondant à l'actuelle Galice et au nord du Portugal, au début du Ve siècle. Ce royaume suève fait de Bracara Augusta sa capitale et existe de 410 à 584, année de son effondrement devant l'armée du roi wisigoth Léovigild.
C'est en 409 que la Gallaecia romaine, ou « Galécie », tombe au pouvoir des Quades et des Marcomans coalisés sous la direction du roi suève Herméric. Le fœdus concédé par Rome légitime la fondation de leur royaume à cet endroit. Il s'agit du premier royaume du Haut Moyen Âge qui frappe monnaie pour signifier son existence.
