La République du Hatay fut créée le 5 septembre 1938 avec l'appui de la France à partir du sandjak d'Alexandrette, qui comprenait également la ville d'Antioche. À la suite de l'accord franco-turc du 23 juin 1939, ce territoire, qui comportait une majorité arabe et une minorité turque, fut officiellement rattaché à la Turquie le 23 juillet 1939.
Les Arabes appartiennent au groupe des Alaouites, et ils constitueraient 65 % de la population, chiffres contestés par la Turquie. Avec la scolarisation obligatoire, les Arabes du Hatay savent parler le turc. Ils doivent utiliser le turc et l'alphabet latin pour les démarches administratives.
