Fatigués de vivre à New York, les époux Blandings décident de faire construire à la campagne la "maison de leurs rêves". Mais le parcours, jusqu'à l'achèvement, sera semé d'embûches : entrepreneurs et ouvriers qui se font prier, tracas financiers, etc. Le rêve manque alors de tourner au cauchemar. Bien que conseillé par son ami Bill Cole, Jim accumule les bévues et fait construire sa maison sur un terrain hypothéqué.
