L'abbazia di Göttweig fu fondata come un monastero di Canonici regolari da Altmann, vescovo di Passavia. L'altar maggiore di una prima chiesa fu consacrato nel 1072, ma il monastero non fu pronto prima del 1083: il documento che ne attesta la fondazione è datato 9 settembre 1083, ed è preservato negli archivi dell'abbazia.
