Insieme con le sette strade che vi sfociano, la piazza fu realizzata nel 1639 sulla "Voldersbempt", un pezzo di prato scoperto. Era delimitata da Anderlechtstraat, il Zenne e il Kleine Zenne. Fino alla copertura del Zenne, era il luogo del mercato delle pulci o del mercato vecchio. Con la creazione delle grandi strade, che attiravano un pubblico più benestante, e le lamentele dei residenti per sporcizia e pulci, le bancarelle di stracci e vari oggetti furono trasferite nel marzo 1873 a Vossenplein nelle Marolle. I bruxellesi chiamavano allora la piazza àven à mèt (mercato vecchio).
