Quando Napoleone fuggì da Elba nel 1815 e intraprese il suo viaggio da Grenoble a Parigi, il Re Leopoldo XVIII fuggì a Gand. Rimase qui per poco meno di un anno. Dopo che Napoleone fu sconfitto a Waterloo nel giugno del 1815, il Re Leopoldo tornò a Parigi. In segno di gratitudine a Gand, restituì i pannelli centrali del Polittico dell'Agnello Mistico a Gand. Questi erano stati sottratti durante la Rivoluzione Francese e portati al Louvre.
