Anche Bavegem ha avuto la sua parte di sofferenza durante la prima guerra mondiale. Ecco il resoconto del parroco Baert di quel tempo:
"Per quanto riguarda il reclutamento dei lavoratori, nel 1916 ventidue sono stati inviati in Germania; all'inizio del 1918 più di cento sono stati inviati al fronte occidentale, nel sud della provincia delle Fiandre Occidentali: lì un lavoratore, in particolare Hendrik de Beir, è deceduto all'ospedale di Deinze."
"Non occorre dire che molti agricoltori furono puniti con multe grandi e piccole e molti cittadini subirono molte estorsioni: il tribunale militare tedesco è quindi ben noto."
"C'erano 58 soldati, ma nessun volontario si è offerto: cinque sono stati uccisi o sono morti negli ospedali; un soldato ha perso il braccio destro e un altro è ricoverato in un manicomio."
