Asse era insieme a Elewijt, Binche e Blicquy uno dei quattro centri principali dei Nervi. I Nervi erano una tribù belga che al tempo della conquista da parte di Giulio Cesare abitava nel nord della Francia e nel sud del Belgio, tra la Schelda e il Sambro. La tribù controllava un'importante sezione della grande via commerciale che da Colonia portava a Amiens (Chaussée Brunehaut).
