La Vismarkt è menzionata già nel XIII secolo. La piazza è nata grazie alla sua posizione su un ramo dell'Yser e era il sito di un porto interno di Leuven. Era il luogo di numerosi scambi commerciali e attività portuali ed era la dimora dei pescatori. La pescheria è il mercato più antico della città.
