Fino al 1266 Chênée apparteneva al baliaggio di Jupille, che era subordinato al vescovato di Verdun. In quell'anno Chênée passò al Principato Vescovile di Liegi. Durante il periodo francese divenne un comune autonomo, che nel 1977 si fuse con il comune di Liegi.
Chênée ospitava nel 1758 tre fabbriche di vetro: Grandchamps & Coune, Bonniver e Cambresier & Co. Alla fine rimase la Verrerie Grandchamps, che produceva le bottiglie per l'acqua minerale Spa. Questa era la successione delle Verreries d'Amblève, fondate nel 1721 ad Aywaille.
