Con la costruzione di nuovi quartieri residenziali, il centro di Melsele ha iniziato a collegarsi a quello di Beveren. Il comune è, dopo il centro di Beveren, quello con il maggior numero di abitanti, quasi 11.200 abitanti. Melsele è uno dei luoghi abitati più antichi della regione del Waas; in passato era un comune rurale dove erano presenti anche laboratori di zoccoli. Nel 1977 il comune si fuse con Beveren. L'ultimo sindaco di Melsele è stato Jos De Roeck.
