La Grande Nete è un affluente della Nete nel bacino idrografico dello Schelda. Ha una lunghezza di 44 chilometri (alcune fonti dicono 70 à 80 km) ed è non navigabile.
La Grande Nete ha origine a nord-est di Hechtel. Da Lier scorre insieme alla Piccola Nete e forma la Nete o la Nete Inferiore. Per chi non riesce a distinguere bene le due Nete: la Grande Nete si trova più a sud della Piccola Nete.
La Grande Nete attraversa i seguenti comuni: Meerhout, Balen, Geel-Oosterlo, vicino a Laakdal, Westerlo, Herselt, Westmeerbeek, Hulshout, Booischot, Heist-op-den-Berg, Hallaar, Itegem, Herenthout, Berlaar, Kessel e Lier.
I suoi principali affluenti sono il Wimp, la Molse Nete e la Grande Laak. Attraverso la Grande Laak, la Grande Nete ha ricevuto anche molta inquinamento dalla Tessenderlo Chemie.
Dal 2013, Natuurpunt ha iniziato a sviluppare gradualmente un'area naturale collegata "Grote Netewoud" nella zona sorgiva della Grande Nete.
Origine
Prima dell'ultima era glaciale (Weichselien), la valle della Grande Nete non era ancora così profondamente scavata. Durante l'era glaciale precedente (Saalien), la Grande Nete drenava verso la valle del Dijle attraverso quella che ora è la valle della Laak. Durante l'ultima era glaciale, la vegetazione è diminuita nuovamente e si è verificata una erosione su larga scala. I detriti erosi hanno bloccato il deflusso verso la Laak e la Grande Nete ha cominciato quindi a fluire verso la valle della Piccola Nete.
