Il "mercato della paglia" è un termine molto specifico che alcuni autori spiegano come il luogo dove nella media età si commerciava la paglia. Chi guarda qui intorno ha tutte le ragioni per dubitarne. È più probabile che il participio "mark" - come in molti altri casi - si riferisca a una zona di confine. La prima parte della parola - "vlas" - potrebbe riguardare il confine con il Paese Vallone. Secondo un'altra teoria, il termine "vlas" (e le sue varianti) può anche riferirsi a una zona ricca di acqua.
Di acqua qui non c'è davvero carenza. Nonostante il "Mercato della paglia" sia situato in alto sulla linea di spartiacque tra la Zenne e l'Hene, essa forma rispetto all'area circostante una sorta di conca dove l'acqua può fluire. Non è quindi sorprendente che da qui sgorgano una mezza dozzina di rivi.
