La menzione più antica dell'Ospedale San Giovanni risale al 1249 ed è evidente che doveva essere stato fondato prima del 1249.
Come nella Sint-Janshospitaal di Bruges, anche qui i fratelli erano incaricati della cura dei malati di sesso maschile, poi della direzione dell'ospedale. Le suore erano responsabili dell'allattamento delle ragazze e delle donne , e poi della cura di tutti i malati.
L'edificio principale risale alla metà del XIII secolo ed è stato costruito in stile primo gotico, in cui esistono ancora molte proporzioni e forme romaniche. Tra il XIII e il XVI secolo furono effettuati numerosi restauri e ulteriori ampliamenti.
Fino all'inizio del 21° secolo, l'ospedale fungeva da casa di riposo per anziani, dopodiché fu abbandonato. Dal 2021 è un nuovo hotspot per il patrimonio e l'arte dove continua la tradizione dell'ospitalità.
