La Baudelostraat fa riferimento al precedente Abbazia di Baudelo, che si trovava in questo luogo.
Questa abbazia era nel XVII secolo una delle più grandi abbazie di Gand, ma di quella antica gloria oggi è rimasto ben poco. Alla fine del XVIII secolo, i monaci furono scacciati dall'abbazia dai repubblicani francesi. Questi trasformarono la chiesa in un 'Tempio della Ragione'.
Nel 1797 il monastero fu trasformato nella Scuola Centrale, che avrebbe costituito la base dell'Ateneo. Il giardino dell'abbazia fu in quel periodo trasformato in un giardino di erbe, il Baudelopark, che fu gravemente mutilato dalla costruzione della Bibliotheekstraat. Solo un numero limitato di alberi secolari unici è rimasto in piedi. Nel 1903 questo giardino di erbe si trasferì in Ledeganckstraat.
