Il comune si trova al margine settentrionale delle Alpi nella valle dell'Inn a 509 m s.l.m., a pochi chilometri a nord del confine tra Germania e Austria, ai piedi dell'Hochsalwand e del Riesenkopf. Da Brannenburg parte la Wendelsteinbahn per il Wendelstein, una delle montagne più famose della Baviera. Allo stesso modo, è conosciuta e particolarmente apprezzata dai motociclisti la strada a pedaggio Tatzelwurm-/Sudelfeldstraße, che passa vicino alla cascata Tatzelwurm e conduce a Bayrischzell.
Il comune si trova a circa 15 km a sud di Rosenheim, 88 km a ovest di Salisburgo, 22 km a nord di Kufstein, 28 km a est di Miesbach e a 70 km da Monaco.
