Lienen è un comune nella regione di Tecklenburger Land, tra Münster e Osnabrück nel stato federato della Renania Settentrionale-Vestfalia.
A nord di Lienen si estendono la maggior parte del parco naturale TERRA.vita e la valle di Holperdorper. Il monte Westerbecker nel parco naturale del Teutoburgo è, con i suoi 236 m sul livello del mare, la vetta più alta del Tecklenburger Land e la più alta all'interno dei distretti del Münsterland. A sud-ovest si apre il paesaggio parkland del Münsterland. La strada per la frazione di Holperdorp si snoda con una serpentina tra il monte Aldruper e il monte Lienener a circa 202 m di altitudine lungo il crinale del parco naturale del Teutoburgo. La montagna di Langenberg, alta 206 metri, si trova per una piccola parte nella frazione di Holperdorp, ma per la maggior parte nel vicino Niedersachsen, nell'area di Bad Iburg.
