Mainz () è il capoluogo dello stato della Renania-Palatinato e con 217.556 abitanti è anche la sua città più grande. Mainz è priva di distretto, uno dei cinque centri principali della Renania-Palatinato e fa parte della regione del Reno-Meno. Insieme alla vicina capitale statale dell'Assia, Wiesbaden, forma un doppio centro transfrontaliero con circa 500.000 abitanti su 301,67 chilometri quadrati. Mainz e Wiesbaden sono le uniche due capitali statali di stati tedeschi a superficie con un confine urbano comune. Insieme alle comunità ebraiche delle città dell'Alto Reno, Speyer e Worms, i monumenti di queste città SchUM sono stati iscritti nel patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO il 27 luglio 2021.
