Spangenberg è una cittadina nel nord-est dell'Assia, nel distretto di Schwalm-Eder. Ha circa 6000 abitanti e una superficie totale di 97,7 chilometri quadrati. La dimensione attuale della città è stata raggiunta dopo la riforma amministrativa e territoriale in Assia, quando negli anni 1970-1974 i quartieri attuali sono stati uniti a Spangenberg. Spangenberg è stata menzionata per la prima volta in un documento nel 1261. Nel 1309 i signori di Treffurt confermarono alla città il diritto di città.
