Le antiche denominazioni del luogo sono 1025 Demeborg, 1227 Drakenburg, 1288 Drakenburg e 1294 Drakenburch. La parte della parola "Drake" potrebbe derivare da "drago". Tuttavia, poiché i draghi raramente compaiono nei nomi antichi, si tende a ritenere che si riferisca al vecchio nome proprio "thraka" – "combattimento, assalto, forza" o a "sporcizia" nel senso di "melma, palude". È più probabile che derivi dal medio-tedesco "Drake, Dragge" – "ancora, morsetto". Ciò significherebbe che il castello potrebbe essere interpretato come "castello ancora" o "castello morsetto".
