Il Lago di Pinnow si trova nel paesaggio lacustre di Sternberg, a circa dieci chilometri a sud-est di Schwerin e a 800 metri dalla sponda orientale del Lago di Schwerin, all'interno del comune di Pinnow. Sulla sponda occidentale, il bacino confina con Raben Steinfeld, mentre a nord con Godern. La baia orientale del lago che si protende verso Pinnow è chiamata Kirchsee.
Le sponde sono difficilmente accessibili, poiché molto ripide e in parte fortemente boschive. Nel lago ci sono due isole chiamate Flakenwerder e Fischerwerder. Sul lato sud si trova il comune di Pinnow, che dà il nome al luogo, e a nord-est il comune di Godern. In entrambi i comuni esistono aree balneabili. Sulla sponda sud si trova l'impianto idrico di Pinnow, che preleva acqua potabile da una profonda falda acquifera e fornisce anche parti di Schwerin.
