La centrale si trova nel quartiere di Lahde della città di Petershagen nel distretto di Minden-Lübbecke in Nordrhein-Westfalen al confine con la Bassa Sassonia ed è stata fino all'entrata in funzione del blocco di centrale Datteln IV nel 2017 con 875 megawatt di potenza netta la centrale a carbone più potente d'Europa con un solo blocco.
