L'aeroporto può guardare indietro a una lunga storia. È stato istituito negli anni '30 dalla Weser-Flugzeugbau GmbH. Lo stabilimento Weserflug adiacente di Lemwerder divenne nel 1961 il VFW-Endmontagewerk, che tra l'altro negli anni '60 e '70 costruì il VFW 614 e il Transall C-160. VFW divenne parte di Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, che a loro volta si fusero nella DASA, che infine divenne parte del gruppo aerospaziale EADS.
