Circa quattromila anni fa, nella nostra zona, i primi agricoltori stanziali si sono eretti un monumento. È rimasto intatto fino a oggi: la tomba megalitica delle Pietre del Diavolo („Düwelsteene“).
A 3,5 chilometri a est dal centro di Heiden, si trova in un paesaggio di dune ricoperte di pini. Come queste dune siano arrivate in Westfalia è un'altra storia: questi cumuli di sabbia hanno origini glaciali. Il vento li ha accumulati durante l'era glaciale di Weichsel (circa cinquantamila anni fa), quando la Germania settentrionale non era più coperta di ghiaccio, ma a causa del freddo ancora presente non aveva uno strato vegetale in grado di trattenere il leggero suolo sabbioso.
