La SMS Rheinland era una delle quattro navi da battaglia della Classe Nassau, le prime dreadnought costruite per la Kaiserliche Marine. La nave fu impostata presso i cantieri navali Stettiner Maschinenbau AG Vulcan di Stettino il primo giugno 1907, varata il 26 settembre 1908, ed entrata in servizio nella Hochseeflotte il 30 aprile 1910. L'armamento principale era costituito da dodici cannoni da 280 mm di calibro, installati i sei torrette binate disposte in una inusuale configurazione ad esagono.
