Steenvoorde si trova nel nord della Francia, ma originariamente qui si parlava un dialetto olandese. Le generazioni più giovani parlano quasi esclusivamente francese. Steenvoorde fu distrutta da Carlo V nel 1553. Il comune è soprattutto conosciuto perché qui, il 10 agosto 1566, alla fine di un pellegrinaggio da Hondschote al monastero di San Lorenzo a Steenvoorde, iniziò la devastazione delle immagini.
