Nanterre è un comune francese situato nella banlieue nord-ovest di Parigi, capoluogo del dipartimento Hauts-de-Seine, nella regione dell'Île-de-France. Con i suoi 94.258 abitanti, è la seconda città più popolosa del dipartimento e la quinta della regione. Zona universitaria, Nanterre ospita il campus dell'Université Paris Nanterre, che conta circa 31.000 studenti. Tra i docenti che vi hanno insegnato spiccano i nomi di Paul Ricœur, Emmanuel Levinas e Jean Baudrillard. Nel maggio del 1968, la sede universitaria fu inoltre protagonista e capofila dei movimenti studenteschi del cosiddetto Maggio francese.
