Nove villaggi, situati nella "Zona Rossa", sono stati completamente cancellati dalla mappa durante la Battaglia di Verdun, spazzati via dal tumulto della battaglia: Beaumont-en-Verdunois, Bezonvaux, Cumières-le-Mort-Homme, Douaumont, Fleury-devant-Douaumont, Haumont-près-Samogneux, Louvemont-Côte-du-Poivre, Ornes, Vaux-devant-Damloup.
I resti delle case e dei luoghi pubblici sono simboleggiati. Ricordano i mestieri e le attività di queste antiche comunità di villaggio. Non sono mai stati ricostruiti. Questi villaggi fantasma, dove i francesi sono morti, hanno una memoria commovente sotto forma di cappelle e monumenti commemorativi eretti dopo la guerra.
