La diga di Vassivière è una struttura di tipo "a peso dritto". È alta 32,9 metri e lunga 220 metri, con una base massiccia di 25 metri di spessore e una cresta di soli 3 metri. Trattiene 1.000 ettari del lago Vassivière, ovvero 106 milioni di m³ di acqua.
Dalla presa d'acqua di Port Crozat, ad Auphelle, l'acqua viene convogliata attraverso un tunnel di 2,6 km e poi, tramite una condotta forzata lunga 611 m, alla centrale sotterranea di Mazet, a Peyrat le Château, vero cuore dell'approvvigionamento energetico del sito. Visibile dalla strada intorno al lago. In stagione sono disponibili visite ai lavori.
