La battaglia di Culloden , combattuta il 16 aprile 1746 presso Inverness nelle Highlands scozzesi, vide i sostenitori di Carlo Edoardo Stuart, detto il "Giovane Pretendente" , definitivamente sconfitti dalle forze lealiste comandate dal Duca di Cumberland, figlio di re Giorgio II, che per l'efferatezza della repressione portata avanti nei confronti dei giacobiti fu soprannominato "Billy il Macellaio".
