Il paese sorge ai piedi delle Prealpi lombarde a 320 m s.l.m., in Brianza ed è situato nell'omonimo Piano d'Erba.
È attraversato dal torrente Bova e dal fiume Lambro. Incluse nel territorio parte delle sponde del Lago di Pusiano e del Lago di Alserio.
L'origine dei vari borghi che in seguito diedero vita ad Erba è piuttosto antica. Il luogo venne infatti abitato in epoche precedenti a quella romana; vi si sarebbero alternati gli Orobi, i Liguri ed i Celti, ma soprattutto i secondi vi lasciarono le loro consuetudini. Il ritrovamento di alcuni utensili in selce presso il Buco del Piombo lascia pensare che la zona fosse già abitata dall'uomo attorno al 30000 a.C..
