Il territorio comunale è situato nella parte occidentale del golfo del Tigullio, in una baia ai piedi dell'omonimo promontorio , ad est di Genova, segnando di fatto il confine geografico tra il Golfo Paradiso e il Tigullio. Tra le altre vette del territorio il monte Pollone .
L'intero territorio comunale è compreso nel Parco naturale regionale di Portofino e nell'Area naturale marina protetta Portofino.
Il modo migliore per apprezzare le meraviglie del parco è quello di percorrere in sicurezza i suoi sentieri più caratteristici ed affascinanti, tutti adeguatamente segnalati. Attraversandone la fitta rete di oltre 60 km, è possibile scoprire la ricchezza e la varietà degli ambienti naturali, dei panorami e dei complessi monumenti del promontorio.
