Con decreto del 24 febbraio 2021 a firma del presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella, a Marsico Nuovo è stato conferito il titolo di città.
Posto a 865 m sul livello del mare, si sviluppa su tre colline che dominano la Val d'Agri: Civita, la più alta con il centro storico, Portello e Casale, più basse, con l'espansione moderna. Intorno sono le vette dei monti Facito, , Maruggio , Calvelluzzo , Malagrina , Tumolo , Volturino , Cognone , Ausineto , Lama , Cavallo , Cavalluccio , Fontanalunga , Schiavo e Arioso .
