È composto da 28 centri abitati, situati lungo le strade che attraversano l'antica centuriazione romana, suddivisi tra il capoluogo e 10 frazioni. Dal 1988 ospita il campus principale dell'Università degli Studi di Salerno.
Il territorio del comune, la cui numerazione geografica è di 3.152 ettari, è situato in parte sul versante sud-occidentale del Pizzo San Michele , in parte sul rilievo del monte Monna e, nella parte bassa, nella Valle alluvionale del Solofrana.
