Bossolasco, dal latino "Buxolascum" cioè "luogo di foreste di bossi"; sorge su un elevato colle, sopra la valle Belbo.
Secondo la "Cronistoria dei Comuni dell'antico Mandamento di Bossolasco con cenni sulle Langhe" di don Pio Giovanni Battista, il primo nucleo del paese sarebbe sorto nel 173 a.C., anno in cui il console romano Mario Pompilio effettuò una spedizione contro i liguri, allora abitanti della Langa.
