Dal 1192 al 1797 fu il capoluogo della repubblica omonima che, seppur legata alle sorti della Repubblica di Genova e degli altri centri di potere locali, godette a tratti di una certa autonomia formale.
Noli è situata sulla costa della Riviera di Ponente, in un'insenatura chiusa a est dall'Isola di Bergeggi e a sud-ovest dal capo omonimo alla foce del torrente Luminella.
