Comune a vocazione turistica, è adagiato nella media Val Boite a quota 910 m s.l.m., tra i massicci dolomitici dell'Antelao e del Pelmo , ed è attraversato dalla SS 51 d'Alemagna. Suo patrono è Santa Lucia, alla quale è intitolata la pieve.
Per la posizione panoramica, gode di una grandiosa vista sull'impervio versante sud dell'Antelao, unico lato da cui è visibile la vistosa fessura e dal quale è possibile ammirare l'imponente dislivello tra l'abitato e la vetta.
